Animal by-Product Standards versus North America in Canadian
Pet Food
Canadian
Pet Food exported to the European Union must now meet
stringent controls on the use of animal products.
Due to the significant outbreak of BSE in Europe and
also the European consumers demand for their perception of
safe food products, the European Union has for the last
several years been moving to implement safety measures.
The EU has designated three classes of animal products
for use in Canadian Pet Food. Each category and its end uses
are well defined. The EU has allowed phasing in periods for
industries to be able to adjust to the new categories.
The final target for full implementation of these
regulations is October 2005. After this date all animal
products used in the EU, whether they were produced there or
in another country or region must meet these standards. The
standards apply to both the rendered product of animals and
the final products such as animal feed and Canadian
Pet Food.
