Allergies
There
are many possibilities as to why we have dog allergies.
Genetics, age, poor digestibility of proteins, a defective
mucosal barrier, and
increased mucosal permeability, due to a variety of reasons
are all predisposing factors.
Proteins
that are incompletely digested have more potential to incite
an immune
response to the residual antigenic proteins. Highly
digestible proteins are completely digested to free amino
acids and small
proteins which have less potential to elicit an allergic
response.
Salmon
meal protein as an example contains highly digestible
protein, which is rapidly digested to free amino acids and
smaller proteins. Fermentable
fiber such as Mannan-oligosaccharides and
fructo-oligosaccharides may have a positive effective on dog
allergies by stimulating the growth of beneficial
intestinal bacteria on the mucosal barrier, and the
production of short chain fatty acids.
Fatty
acids such as linolenic (LA), gamma linoleic (GLA), eicosapentaenoic
(EPA),
and docosahexaenoic acid have
several important structural,
biochemical, and beneficial effects on the skin and
hair coat.
It
has long been known that the skin provides a barrier to
protect the body
from potentially damaging environmental influences including
contact with
allergens.
